Does Corona Virus Spreads Through Food?


There is no evidence to suggest that coronavirus is transmitted through food and there have not been any reports of transmission of virus through food.
Coronaviruses requires a host (animal or human) to grow in and cannot grow in food. Hence proper cooking is required to kill the virus. It is important to maintain good hygiene practices for open food (unpacked food). However, it may be possible that infected food workers or consumers could pass the virus to food, by coughing and sneezing, or through hand contact.
It is therefore important to strictly follow good personal hygiene practices like
·        proper hand hygiene
·        cough/cold hygiene practices
·        safe food practices
There are some misconceptions related to food. Coronavirus is reported to have started from China in the wet markets where people come every day to shop for meats. It has been said that it is safe to eat seafood as no such link between sea animals and coronavirus has been established. It is completely safe to eat non-vegetarian food. The only thing that you need to follow is that the meat should not be raw and hygienically cooked. Cooking for at least 30 minutes at 60°C kills Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome which is a similar to COVID-19.
